The year 2001 marked the beginning of the modern Tibet national football team. The team was officially formed in 2001 by the Tibetan National Football Association and played its first international match on 30 June 2001, losing 4–1 to Greenland national football team in Denmark. Later that year, Tibet also played a friendly against Monaco national football team, losing 2–1. Despite the results, 2001 was a historic year as Tibet established an international football team and gained worldwide attention through its first official matches.
