Paris Saint-Germain played the 2000–2001 season in Ligue 1, finishing 9th in the league, one of the club’s weaker campaigns in recent history. The season began under Philippe Bergeroo, but Luis Fernández took over as coach in December 2000, guiding the team through the second half of the campaign. In domestic cup competitions, PSG were eliminated early in both the Coupe de la Ligue and Coupe de France. In Europe, the club competed in the UEFA Cup but were knocked out in the second round. The season is remembered as a transitional period with mixed results, as PSG rebuilt the squad and prepared for a stronger challenge in the following years.
Nicolas Anelka is a retired French striker known for his pace, technical skill, and versatility in attack. He began his professional career at Paris Saint-Germain (1996–1997), making his debut as a teenager before moving to Arsenal in 1997, where he won the Premier League and FA Cup. After Arsenal, Anelka played for a number of top European clubs, including Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester City, Fenerbahçe, Bolton, Chelsea, Shanghai Shenhua, Juventus, and West Bromwich Albion, winning league titles in England, Spain, and France. In the period 2000-2002, Anelka was also active for PSG.
Internationally, Anelka earned 69 caps for France, scoring 14 goals. He was part of the squads that won Euro 2000 and the 1998 FIFA World Cup, although he did not play in the final of the latter. Anelka was known for his movement, finishing, and ability to adapt to different leagues and styles of play, making him one of France’s most well-traveled and talented forwards of his generation.
