Oldham Athletic’s period from 1989 to 1991 was one of the most successful in the club’s modern history. Oldham Athletic reached the 1990 Football League Cup final under manager Joe Royle, losing to Nottingham Forest at Wembley. The club also made a strong run in the 1989–1990 FA Cup, reaching the semi-finals. The following 1990–1991 season was even more important, as Oldham won the Second Division title and secured promotion to the First Division, ending a 68-year absence from the top tier of English football.
