Description
Match worn Uruguay home shirt from number #9 Daniel Fonseca during one or multiple 1998 World Cup qualification matches. The Uruguayan national football team was part of the CONMEBOL qualification group, together with Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela. The group matches were played in the years 1996 and 1997.
In 1995, when Uruguay used the same shirts, Fonseca played two international friendlies (away versus Spain and England) and he participated in all the six 1995 Copa América matches. Uruguay became first in group A with Venezuela, Paraguay and Mexico. After the group stage, Uruguay played 3 more matches to win the Copa América after penalties versus Brazil (see all matches below). Fonseca played the first half of this final. However, in all Fonseca’s international games of 1995, Uruguay wore long sleeved shirts.
In 1996 and 1997, when this shirt was also used, Daniel Fonseca played 8 of the 16 1998 World Cup qualification matches. These are:

5. Uruguay 0 – 0 Argentina (12 January 1997) –> in short sleeves
6. Ecuador 4 – 0 Uruguay Ecuador (12 February 1997) –> in short sleeves (Fonseca got sent off in minute ’87)
7. Uruguay 1 – 0 Chile (20 August 1997) –> in long sleeves
8. Peru 2 – 1 Uruguay (10 September 1997) –> in short sleeves (Fonseca got sent off in minute ’83)
Match nr. 8, away against Peru, was the last international match of Fonseca!
The shirt has all the characteristics of a match shirt: correct player sized numbers on the front and back, and the size label in the neck (which was only present in match shirts and not in commercially available fanshop shirts).
In 5 of the 8 matches listed above Uruguay were playing in short sleeved shirts. In at least one of these qualifiers, Fonseca wore the shirt available here. A signed letter by the person who received this shirt confirms its authenticity.
