Description
Match worn or issued Real Madrid home shirt by the club’s number 10 in the season 1990-91 or 1991-92. This number #10 was worn by Santiago Aragón but most frequently by Gheorghe Hagi.
Gheorghe Hagi is a former attacking midfielder from Romania. He is considered one of the best in his position in the 1980s and 1990s. From his tenth year, Hagi joined FC Constanța in their youth academy. After 2 years at Luceafărul București, a club where the most talented young football players in Romania were gathered, he returned to FC Constanța to make his senior/first team debut in Romanias top division in 1982. Already after one season he made the move to Sportul Studențesc in Bucharest.
Early 1987, Gheorghe was burrowed to Steaua București to play the European Super Cup final against Dynamo Kyiv on 24 februari 1987. Hagi scored the only and winning goal in this match. The ‘one-match’ loan deal became a contract and he played for Steaua until 1990. In around 100 appearances for the club he almost scored every game. On 27 June 1990, after the 1990 World Cup, Real Madrid signed the midfielder. After two seasons in Madrid he made the move to Brescia, Italy, and in 1994 he went back to Spain to play for FC Barcelona (1994–1996). Hagi ended his career at Galatasaray (1996–2001). He was active for the Romanian national football team in the period 1983-2000.
Midfielder Santiago Aragón was born in Málaga, Spain. The former football player was part of Real Madrid’s youth academy and made his Real Madrid Castilla (the B team) but in 1985. He made his senior debut for the first team on 16 April 1988. In his period as a first team player (1988-1993), Aragón was loaned out to several Spanish clubs before making a definite move to Real Zaragoza (1993-2003). Aragón was never part of the first Spanish national football team.
In the period 1990-1992, Real Madrid won one price: the Supercopa de España in the season 1990-91.
The shirt has all the characteristics of a match shirt: painted Otaysa sponsor logo and number 10 and made in Poland instead of E.C.C.
In this period, shirts were often used in multiple competition matches by whoever started with that number (so often also by multiple players). It is almost certain that it was worn as reserve competition shirts were only very rarely made.
