Olympique de Marseille’s 2000-01 season was disappointing, as the club finished 15th in Ligue 1, just a few points clear of the relegation zone. The season was characterized by managerial instability and a lack of cohesion within the squad, leading to underwhelming performances in both domestic league and cup competitions.
Ibrahima Bakayoko joined Marseille from Everton in 1999. The Ivorian striker, known for his strength and finishing ability, had a mixed spell in France, scoring some crucial goals but struggling with consistency. After his stint at Marseille (in 2003), Bakayoko continued a nomadic career across Europe, playing in leagues such as Spain’s La Liga with Osasuna, France’s Ligue 2 with Istres, and later in Italy and Greece, further building his reputation as a well-traveled professional.
This shirt has all the characteristics of a match shirt: correct player size and style number and name in plastic and the Ligue 1 patch. The following features are different from the commercially available fanshop shirts:
- Adidas “EQUIPMENT” tag replaced the Adidas “CLIMALITE” tag on the left side of the shirt. The Climalite tag was present on commercially available fanshop versions.
- The Adidas “Authentic Licensed Product” patch is not present in the bottom right of the front.
It’s highly likely that this shirt was match worn, because Bakayoko was playing almost every match in the 2000-01 season for l’OM.
