Match worn/issued L/S Inter Milan home shirt 1992-1994 by #10 (Bergkamp?)

999.99

Very rare match worn or issued long-sleeved Inter Milan home shirt in either or both of the 1992-1993 and 1993-1994 seasons by number #10, which was likely living football legend Dennis Bergkamp.

Already in the first Serie A games of the 1992-93 season, the number #10 was used by multiple players. Matthias Sammer wore the number #10 in 1992-93 in most of the games of late 1992. In January 1993 he went back to Germany to play for Borussia Dortmund. Stefano Desideri also wore number #10 (against Sampdoria on 08-11-1992); Russian midfielder Igor Shalimov wore the number against AC Milan on 22-11-1992. I believe that even Nicola Berti used the number in the home game against Brescia a week later, on 29-11-1992. And the above matches all in the long sleeved home shirt. In 1993, Shamilov played all the matches in where long-sleeved home shirts were used by Inter with number 10.

In the 1993-94 season, Bergkamp always played with number 10 when he started a match. In the Serie A, there were only a handful of matches where Bergkamp did not start the match. In these games, because Inter Milan always started with numbers 1-11 in this season, other players wore the number 10.

In the 1992-1993 season, two numbers where used: a thin felt one and a thicker cloth one like the one sold here. In the 1993-1994 season, three different numbers were used: a thin felt one, a thicker cloth one and a thin felt one with the Umbro logo at the bottom of every number. The last version was used during all the 1994 matches (see the last photo). Multiple number styles were used in both the Italian competition but also the UEFA Cup (which Inter won in the 1993-94 season). In the 1992-93 season, Inter Milan played 13 Serie A matches with a long-sleeved home shirt. In the following season, this was 16 times. See all the matches below.

This shirt has all the characteristics of a match shirt: the professionally stitched number in cloth material on the back, long sleeves (not commercially available), but above all the fully embroidered Umbro logo on the chest which on the official replica shirts was screen printed. Furthermore, the Umbro lettering is capitalized which is also not the case on the shirts that were commercially available shirts.

This shirt sold here looks a lot like the shirt used in the matches played in 1993 of the 1993-1994 season. During these matches it looks like numbers were used of the same cloth material. Also the placement of the logos on the shirt (it’s all about the details!) look the same. See photo 14 of Bergkamp. In photo 15 you can clearly see that Sammer’s number 10 shirt has the Umbro logo perfectly placed on the black vertical stripe, whereas this is not the case on the shirt sold here.

In addition to the information stated above, the previous owner received it at the time from a FIFA agent. This person claims it was used in the 1993-94 season. In the early 90s, shirts were often used in multiple competition matches by whoever started with that number (so often also by multiple players). It is almost certain that it was worn as reserve competition shirts were only very rarely made.
