Match worn/issued Bologna home shirt 1988-1989 by Giuseppe Lorenzo #9

399.99

Match worn or issued Bologna home shirt by the club’s number 9 in the season 1988-1989. The number 9 was mainly worn by Giuseppe Lorenzo. An unbelievably beautiful shirt. The embroidered sponsor logo is absolutely stunning!

The 1988-89 season marked Bologna’s return to Serie A after earning promotion in 1988. Under manager Gigi Maifredi, the team aimed to secure top-flight stability with an attacking, entertaining style of play. Bologna finished in 14th place, avoiding relegation but facing challenges in a competitive league. Key players included Giuseppe Lorenzo, who contributed in attack, and experienced figures like Eraldo Pecci and Massimo Bonini in midfield. Despite struggles, the season laid the groundwork for Bologna’s evolution under Maifredi, who would later implement his famous “Champagne Football” philosophy at the club.

Giuseppe Lorenzo is a former Italian striker. After starting his top-flight (Serie A) career with Sampdoria in 1985-1987, where he lost a Coppa Italia final, he played at Cesena before joining Bologna in 1988. He scored on his debut against Pisa but found the net only a handful of times that 1988-89 season. After a brief return to Catanzaro, Lorenzo rejoined Bologna and played in the 1990-91 UEFA Cup, scoring the decisive penalty to eliminate Admira Wacker. He later played in Serie B with Taranto and helped Pistoiese earn promotion before winding down his career in the lower leagues with Forlì, Gubbio, and Arezzo, retiring at 35.

Lorenzo is also remembered for an unfortunate record—he received the fastest red card in Serie A history, getting sent off just 10 seconds into a match while playing for Bologna (in December 1990). Despite this, he remained an important figure for the club, offering experience and goal-scoring ability during his time at the Stadio Renato Dall’Ara.

The shirt has all the characteristics of a match shirt: the embroidered sponsor logo on the front and the professionally stitched number in cloth material on the back.

In this period, shirts were often used in multiple competition matches by whoever started with that number (so often also by multiple players). It is almost certain that this shirt was worn during a match, as reserve competition shirts were only very rarely made.
