Costinha (Francisco José Rodrigues da Costa) was a Portuguese defensive midfielder. His senior career started in 1993, playing for the club Oriental in his place of birth: Lisbon. After playing a season for both Machico (1995-96) and Nacional (1996-97), Da Costa moved to AS Monaco. With Monaco he won the Ligue 1 in the 1999-2000 season. Known for his tactical awareness and ball-winning ability, Costinha was a key figure in the midfield, laying the groundwork for a successful career that included major European honors with his next club FC Porto. He played for Porto in the period 2001-2005 and he won two league titles, the 2002-03 UEFA Cup, but above all the 2003-04 UEFA Champions League. In the period 1998–2006 Costinha played for the Portuguese national football team, playing over 50 matches for his country.
