Match worn/issued AJ Auxerre home shirt 1986-1988 by #12 in Medium

799.99

Very rare match worn or issued AJ Auxerre home shirt by a number 12 in the seasons 1986-1987 or 1987-1988. The number 12 was worn by a substitute/bench player, as Auxerre started most (or all?) matches with numbers 1-11. And most likely it was worn by a defender, cause the numbers 12 and 13 were mostly worn by defenders, numbers 14-15 by midfielders and the number 16 by an attacking player.

The 1986-88 period was an exciting time for AJ Auxerre, as the club continued to establish itself as a force in French football under the legendary management of Guy Roux. Known for developing young talent, Auxerre remained a competitive side in Ligue 1, consistently finishing in the upper half of the table. During these seasons, Auxerre featured standout French players like Bruno Martini, Basile Boli and Willliam Prunier, who played key roles in the team’s performances. But of course also French legend Éric Cantona, who was top scorer in the 1986-87 season for Auxerre. In 1987-88 season, French left-winger Pascal Vahirua scored more goals for the club. The club maintained its reputation for attacking football and talent development, setting the stage for future successes, including their first Coupe de France victory in the 1990s.

The shirt has all the characteristics of a match shirt: correct player size number in felt material and sponsor logo on the backside (which were not available for commercially available fanshop versions).

In this period, shirts were often used in multiple competition matches by whoever started with that number (so often also by multiple players). It is almost certain that this shirt was worn during a match, as reserve competition shirts were only very rarely made.
