The 1994–1996 period was a successful time for the Germany national team under coach Berti Vogts. After reaching the quarter-finals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated by the Bulgaria national football team, Germany bounced back to win UEFA Euro 1996. They defeated the Czech Republic national football team 2–1 in the final, with Oliver Bierhoff scoring the winning golden goal. Key players during this period included Matthias Sammer, Jürgen Klinsmann and Andreas Köpke.
Christian Wörns was a dependable central defender who enjoyed a successful career in German football. He began at SV Waldhof Mannheim (1989–1991) before playing for Bayer 04 Leverkusen (1991–1998), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1998–1999) and Borussia Dortmund (1999–2008). At Dortmund, he won the Bundesliga title in 2001–02 and reached the 2002 UEFA Cup Final. Wörns earned 66 caps for the Germany national team and represented his country at UEFA Euro 1992, the 1998 FIFA World Cup and the 2002 FIFA World Cup, where Germany finished as runners-up.
