1997 Tournoi de France
The 1997 Tournoi de France was an international football tournament held in France in June 1997 as preparation for the 1998 FIFA World Cup. Four national teams—Brazil, England, France, and Italy—competed in a single round-robin format, where each team played the others once. The team with the best overall record won the tournament. Often called Le Tournoi, it was the second edition of the Tournoi de France, following the first tournament in 1988.
On 4 June 1997 England played Italy and won 2-0. Goals were scored by Ian Wright and Paul Scholes. The second game was played against France on 7 June 1997. England won 0-1 and Alan Shearer made the only goal. The last game for England was played gainst Brazil on 10 June 1997. David Seaman began his professional career at Leeds United FC before playing for Peterborough United FC, Birmingham City FC and Queens Park Rangers FC. Seaman became a star at Arsenal FC, where he played from 1990 to 2003 and won multiple league titles, FA Cups and the 1993 European Cup Winners’ Cup. Known for his positioning, calm presence and shot-stopping ability, he earned 75 caps for the England national football team and represented his country at the 1998 FIFA World Cup, 2002 FIFA World Cup and two European Championships. One of the most famous moments of his career was his spectacular save against Paul Peschisolido in the FA Cup 2002–03.
