The 1990-91 season marked the end of Arrigo Sacchi’s era at AC Milan, as the team finished second in Serie A, behind Sampdoria. While Milan still had world-class talent like Van Basten, Gullit, and Baresi, they struggled with consistency and ended the season without a trophy. In the European Cup, Milan’s campaign ended in controversy against Marseille in the quarterfinals, after a stadium blackout led to their forfeit and a UEFA ban from Europe for the following season. Despite domestic disappointment, Milan still showcased their dominance by winning both the 1990 European Super Cup and the 1990 Intercontinental Cup, adding to their impressive trophy haul.
By 1990-91, Carlo Ancelotti was in the final stages of his playing career, having been a crucial part of Sacchi’s Milan. Though injuries limited his playing time, his leadership and tactical intelligence remained invaluable. He retired at the end of the following season (1991-92), closing a successful career that included two Serie A titles (1983 with Roma, 1988 with Milan) and two European Cups (1989, 1990).
