Description
Very special and rare Juventus long-sleeved home shirt as worn during the European/South American Cup 1996, with Alessandro Del Piero (number #10) on the back. The text “European/South American Cup 1996”, also known as Intercontinental Cup or Toyota Cup, is present within the material of the left sleeve.
Alessandro Del Piero is a true Juventus club legend. He played over 700(!) matches for the club from Turin (Torino), being a record for the most appearances for the club. He is seen as one of the greatest Italian footballers of all time and one of the best of his generation in general. After the 1995-96 season, Juventus finished 2nd in the Serie A, stranded in the Coppa Italia, but won both the Supercoppa Italiana and the UEFA Champions League.
Each year, the winner of the UEFA Champions League (highest European football league) and the Copa Libertadores (highest South-American football league) are fighting for the Intercontinental Cup, also known as the European/South American Cup. On 26 November 1996, this match was played between Juventus (winners of the European Cup in the season 1995-96) and River Plate (winners of the 1996 Copa Libertadores). In National Stadium, Tokyo, Juventus won 1-0 because of a late goal by Del Piero. He was then named man of the match and honored by the release of this shirt.
The number 10 is present within the material of the shirt, while “Del Piero” is applied in thin plastic material. Two versions of this special shirt were released in 1996: one batch of 500 shirts that were made in Italy, the other available in fanshops in Japan (amount unknown, but also not a large batch). The shirt sold here is the latter version.
