The 1998–2000 period was an important time for the Jamaica national football team. In 1998, Jamaica made their first appearance at the 1998 FIFA World Cup under coach René Simões. The team earned a historic first World Cup win by defeating the Japan national football team 2–1. After the tournament, Jamaica continued competing in regional tournaments such as the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup. Key players during this period included Theodore Whitmore, Walter Boyd and Ian Goodison.
