The 1988–1991 period was a successful time for the West Germany national football team under coach Franz Beckenbauer. At UEFA Euro 1988, hosted in West Germany, the team reached the semi-finals before losing to Netherlands national team. West Germany then won the 1990 FIFA World Cup by defeating Argentina national football team 1–0 in the final. After German reunification in 1990, the team officially became the Germany national team in 1991. Key players during this period included Lothar Matthäus, Jürgen Klinsmann and Andreas Brehme.
