The 1992–1994 period was a competitive time for the Germany national team under coach Berti Vogts. Germany reached the final of UEFA Euro 1992, defeating hosts Sweden in the semi-finals before losing 2–0 to the surprise winners, the Danish national football team. Two years later, Germany reached the quarter-finals of the 1994 FIFA World Cup, where they were eliminated by Bulgaria. Key players during this period included Jürgen Klinsmann, Thomas Häßler and Matthias Sammer.
Thomas Häßler was one of Germany’s finest attacking midfielders, admired for his vision, passing and outstanding free-kick ability despite his small stature. He began his professional career at 1. FC Köln (1984–1990) before playing for Juventus FC (1990–1991), AS Roma (1991–1994), Karlsruher SC (1994–1998), Borussia Dortmund (1998–1999), TSV 1860 Munich (1999–2003) and SV Austria Salzburg (2003–2004). Hässler earned 101 caps for Germany and played a key role in the run to the UEFA Euro 1992 final, scoring twice and being named in the Team of the Tournament. He later helped Germany win UEFA Euro 1996 and remained one of the country’s most influential midfielders throughout the 1990s.
