Barcelona’s 1995–1997 period was a transitional but successful cup-focused era. In the 1995–1996 season, under Johan Cruyff, Barcelona finished third in La Liga and reached the Copa del Rey final but lost to Atlético Madrid, while also being eliminated in the UEFA Cup semi-finals. The following 1996–1997 season, with Bobby Robson as head coach, saw Barcelona finish second in La Liga behind Real Madrid, but they won the Copa del Rey, the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, and the Supercopa de España, with Ronaldo as the team’s top scorer. These two seasons marked the end of Cruyff’s “Dream Team” era and the start of Robson’s cup-focused success.
Ronaldo, often called Ronaldo Nazário, is regarded as one of the greatest strikers in football history. Known for his explosive speed, dribbling and clinical finishing, Ronaldo became a global star at a young age. After starting at Cruzeiro Esporte Clube, he played for PSV Eindhoven (1994–1996), where he scored heavily and established himself as one of the best young players in the world. He later starred for FC Barcelona (1996–1997), Inter Milan (1997–2002), Real Madrid CF (2002–2007), AC Milan (2007–2008) and Sport Club Corinthians Paulista (2009–2011). Ronaldo won the 1994 FIFA World Cup and 2002 FIFA World Cup with Brazil and became the top scorer at the 2002 tournament. Despite serious knee injuries during his career, he remained one of football’s most iconic and feared forwards.
