The England national team experienced a difficult period between 1993 and 1995. England national football team failed to qualify for the 1994 FIFA World Cup after finishing third in their qualifying group behind Norway and the Netherlands. Graham Taylor left as manager after the unsuccessful campaign and was replaced by Terry Venables in 1994. During the following year, England played mainly friendly matches while preparing for UEFA Euro 1996, which they would host. Key players in this period included Alan Shearer, David Platt, Paul Ince and Tony Adams, as the team began rebuilding under Venables after the disappointment of missing the World Cup.
