The 1994–1995 period was a difficult time for the Colombia national football team after high expectations following qualification for the 1994 FIFA World Cup. Colombia were eliminated in the group stage after defeats against Romania national football team and United States men’s national soccer team. Shortly after the tournament, defender Andrés Escobar was tragically murdered in Medellín. Key players during this period included Carlos Valderrama, Freddy Rincón and Faustino Asprilla.
