The 1996-97 season was a disappointing and chaotic one for AS Roma, marked by struggles both on and off the pitch. The club started the season under Carlos Bianchi, but after a poor run of results, he was sacked in April 1997 and replaced by Nils Liedholm.
Despite high expectations, Roma finished 12th in Serie A, far from European qualification. The team also crashed out of the Coppa Italia early, making it a forgettable campaign for the Giallorossi. The season ended with hopes of rebuilding under a new approach for the following year. Abel Balbo was top scorer this season. Other key players were Francesco Totti, Fabio Petruzzi and Damiano Tommasi.
