Ajax’s year 1996 was a historic but transitional period for the club. In May 1996, Ajax reached the UEFA Champions League final for the second year in a row but lost to Juventus on penalties in Rome. Earlier in the year, Ajax won the Intercontinental Cup by defeating Grêmio in Tokyo, confirming their status as world champions. During 1996, Ajax also secured the 1995–1996 Eredivisie title, but several key players left the club, marking the end of the highly successful mid-1990s team.
De Meer Stadion was located in the east of Amsterdam and had a capacity of around 19,500. De Meer hosted many league matches and European games, including important fixtures during Ajax’s rise in the 1970s and 1990s. Ajax played their final match at De Meer in April 1996 before moving to the Amsterdam Arena for the 1996–1997 season.
