Ajax played the 2019–2020 season under head coach Erik ten Hag, but the year ended in an unusual way. In the Eredivisie, Ajax were top of the table on goal difference when the season was stopped early due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, no league champion was officially awarded. In cup competition, Ajax were eliminated in the semi-finals of the KNVB Cup by Utrecht. In Europe, Ajax finished third in their UEFA Champions League group and moved into the Europa League, where they were eliminated by Getafe in the round of 32.
