Ajax played the 2019–2020 season under head coach Erik ten Hag, but the year ended in an unusual way. Ajax were top of the Eredivisie table on goal difference when the season was stopped early due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and no league champion was officially awarded. In the KNVB Cup, Ajax were eliminated in the semi-finals by FC Utrecht. In Europe, Ajax finished third in their UEFA Champions League group and moved into the Europa League, where they were knocked out in the round of 32 by Getafe.
