Ajax played the 2016–2017 season under head coach Peter Bosz and had a strong year, especially in Europe. Ajax finished 2nd in the Eredivisie, just one point behind champions Feyenoord, narrowly missing out on the league title. In domestic cup competition, Ajax reached the KNVB Cup final but lost to Vitesse.
