Ajax played the 2012–2013 season under head coach Frank de Boer and continued their strong domestic run. Ajax won the Eredivisie title for the third season in a row, finishing comfortably at the top of the table. In domestic KNVB cup competition, Ajax were eliminated in the semi-finals. In Europe, Ajax competed in the UEFA Champions League group stage, finishing third behind Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid. Ajax moved into the Europa League, where they were eliminated by Steaua Bucharest in the round of 32.
